Assessing Cancer Risks of PFOA and PFOS: IARC's Latest Findings on Persistent Chemicals

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recently evaluated PFOA and PFOS, two highly persistent and widely used PFAS chemicals, assessing their cancer risks based on new and existing data. PFOA, linked to kidney and testicular cancers, has been classified as carcinogenic (Group 1), highlighting its serious health concerns, particularly for those exposed through contaminated water or occupational settings. PFOS, used similarly in firefighting foams and consumer goods, is considered possibly carcinogenic (Group 2B), with some evidence suggesting risks for cancer. The findings underline concerns about prolonged environmental exposure, as these chemicals accumulate in the body over time and remain in the environment for decades.
